The Weirdos are a fictional alien puppet band created by Coldplay for the concept of the song "Biutyful", the eighth track from their ninth studio album, Music of the Spheres (2021). They were introduced during the second leg of the Music of the Spheres World Tour and were crafted by special/visual effects company Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

The Weirdos are composed by lead singer Angel Moon, drummer Donk, guitarist Sparkman, keyboardist The Wizard, and manager Bruce Cakemix.

During the Music of the Spheres World Tour, Coldplay have used Angel Moon's puppet to duet with Chris Martin for two songs on the setlist: "Human Heart" (simulating We Are King's parts) and "Biutyful".[1] On 12 May 2022, Coldplay let The Weirdos join onstage — manipulated by puppeteers — to perform "Biutyful" for its official music video, introducing them for the first time to a general audience.[2]

All band members of The Weirdos were created from old and disused puppets in Los Angeles by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, known for creating realistic animatronic creatures and creature suits. The company was founded in 1979 by late American puppeteer Jim Henson, the creator of Kermit the Frog and The Muppets characters.[3] The fictional band is both manipulated and voiced by their puppeteers, except Angel Moon, who is manipulated by Nicolette Santino though voiced by Chris Martin.

2021–present: Biutyful, Coldplay, and record deal[]

Coming “from another planet”, The Weirdos are a young band of alien puppets composed by lead singer Angel Moon, drummer Donk, guitarist Sparkman, and keyboardist The Wizard, and are managed by Bruce Cakemix. In order to start them out, they have recorded their first song in 2021 called "Biutyful", a collaboration with British rock band Coldplay. Known for their support of up-and-coming musical acts, Coldplay made Angel Moon a regular performer on their ongoing eighth concert tour called Music of the Spheres World Tour; she has been singing with them on Coldplay's "Human Heart" and The Weirdos' "Biutyful". The full band made their first public appearance in Glendale, Arizona, on 12 May 2022, after Coldplay invited them to join onstage to film the music video for "Biutyful" in the audience.[2]

Helped by Chris Martin, The Weirdos have signed a “historic” contract with Coldplay record labels Parlophone and Atlantic on 7 June 2022. According to a statement announcing the band's deal, Bruce Cakemix described it as “the biggest step forward in human-alien relations since Close Encounters.” Coldplay also benefited from the deal, as they intend to release music that they would like more visibility through The Weirdos. Martin explained, “[...] We do have songs we want to bring some attention to, but with this we asked the Weirdos if they would do the song and front it and we would feature.”

He also mentioned that some people refer to the puppet band as coming from another planet or from “a room in Los Angeles where all of the rejected puppets live”.[4]

Following their signing, The Weirdos made their TV debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on 10 June. They were interviewed along with Chris Martin by the American television host, comedian, and actor Jimmy Fallon, and closed the show performing "Biutyful" with Chris.[5]

Trivia[]

  • The Wizard somewhat resembles the prototypical Libido from the Inside the Head segment in the pilot episode of the Jim Henson teen TV series, CityKids. Either that or he is a recycled version of the prototypical Libido.
