"Sparks" is a song by Coldplay from their debut studio album, Parachutes. It is the fourth track on the album. The song was later included as the opening track on band's third extended play, Acoustic.

Recording and composition[]

In the 20th anniversary of Parachutes release, a special interview about the album was made by BBC Radio 2's Jo Whiley. About the song, Jonny Buckland told he has fond memories of its recording process and alleged: "Mainly because it's was the one song we basically got in two takes or something and we just played all together in a room, when we didn't have any arguments about it, just played it and when everybody went, "Oh, yeah, there we go."[1]

NME described "Sparks" as an acoustic love song about a person who's "trying to convince an ex that he's worth another punt – but there's also a sly hint, too, that he knows he'll let her down again."[2]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Did I drive you away?
I know what you'll say
You say, "Oh, sing one you know"
But I promise you this
I'll always look out for you
Yeah, that's what I'll do

[Chorus]
I say, oh
I say, oh

[Verse 2]
My heart is yours
It's you that I hold on to
Yeah, that's what I do
And I know I was wrong
But I won't let you down
Oh yeah I will, yeah I will, yes I will, yeah I will

[Chorus]
I said, oh
I cry, oh

[Bridge]
Yeah, I saw sparks
Yeah, I saw sparks
And I saw sparks
Yeah, I saw sparks
Sing it out

[Outro]
La, la, la, la, oh…
La, la, la, la, oh…
La, la, la, la, oh…
La, la, la, la, oh…

Critical reception[]

In a ranking of the band's entire discography, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of Parachutes, NME said "the way [it] is constructed seems to mimic the feeling of a tiny spark of fire landing on your skin. It does so gently, floating down, then there's a tingling of heat, and then just a comfortable warmth. The slowness of the acoustic guitar here is both apologetic and seductive."[3]

Trivia[]

  • Guy Berryman revealed the bassline of the song is his favourite from the album.[4]
