"Parachutes" is a song by Coldplay from their debut studio album, Parachutes. It is the seventh track on the album.

Composition[]

The song is the title track of the album and works as a 46 seconds interlude between "Trouble" and "High Speed".[1] Such short interludes would appear again on the band's fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, on the tracks "Mylo Xyloto", "M.M.I.X.", and "A Hopeful Transmission", and their ninth studio album, Music of the Spheres, on the tracks “Music of the Spheres (song)”, “Alien Choir”, and “Music of the Spheres II”.

"Parachutes" was described as "a quiet interlude, revisiting the album's recurring theme of unconditional love as Martin sings against sensitive guitars", and also as a "poem of a new relationship or wanting that person you can't have".[2][3]

Lyrics[]

[Verse]
In a haze, a stormy haze
I'll be round, I'll be loving you always
Always
Here I am and I'll take my time
Here I am and I'll wait in line always
Always

Critical reception[]

In a ranking of the band's entire discography, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of Parachutes, NME described the song as "lazy but showing just how much can be done with so little, their first ever title track favoured a deft but bare acoustic line, with Martin keeping well within his comfort zone as he mutters mysterious but still romantic lyrics. "Here I am and I'll wait in line always" doesn't sound like much on paper, but the yearning in that final "always" hits the spot."[4]

In 2020, the song was listed as the #1 Most Memorable and Well Done Album Interlude.[5]
