"Ode to Deodorant", also known as "Ode to Deodorant/Brothers + Sisters", is the first song by Coldplay — called "The Coldplay" at the time — as an ensemble. It was released on cassette in January 1998 by Phil Harvey, the band's original manager, for local concert promoters. Brothers & Sisters is the second song on the cassette, and would later become the band's first commercial single. It was recorded for a prank when they were students.

Since in an interview in August 2003, the band's drummer, Will Champion, commented that the song has a good ending and a good bass line, but that it's a weird song. When Chris Martin was asked if he was embarrassed by the song, he said he didn't listen to it.

It was one of the songs played at Coldplay's first concert on January 16, 1998 at Camden's Laurel Tree bar.

In early 2005, a cassette with the song was sold on EBay. A fan bought it and distributed it on the internet on January 13, 2006. In 2018 another fan bought it on Discogs.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Here's an Ode, ah, to deodorant
It's my thing, ah it's my favourite hygiene
It keeps me through the day
Another ode, ah to deodorant
It's my thing, ah it's my favourite hygiene
It's the confidence I need

[Chorus]
It's medicine for the soul
It's medicine for the mind
It picks me up and makes me whole
It makes me feel alright

[Verse 2]
Here's an Ode, an ode to aerosol
It's my thing
Ah, it's my favourite hygiene, it's the confidence I need

[Chorus]
It's medicine for the soul
It's medicine for the mind
It picks me up and makes me whole
It makes me feel alright

[Outro]
It's okay, oh, would I ever let you down, no way
Oh, would I ever let you down, okay?
Oh, would I ever let you down, no way
Oh, would I ever let you down
I'll never let you, I'll never let you, I'll never let you down, no way
Would I ever let you let you down, no way
Would I ever let you let you down, no way
Would I ever let you let you down, no way
Would I ever let you let you down, no way
