"1.36" is a song by Coldplay and the first B-Side of the single "The Scientist".

Background and composition[]

Simon Williams, the founder of Fierce Panda Records, the label which released Coldplay's first single "Brothers & Sisters", said the song's original length used to be 1:36 minutes long. The band liked the sound of the number and decided to name the track that way.[1] "1.36" features Tim Wheeler of the Northern Irish rock band Ash providing additional guitars and backing vocals by English actor and comedian Simon Pegg, Chris Martin and the band's closest friend.[2]

In a ranking of the band's entire discography, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of Parachutes, NME described the song as a “quickie”, adding, “All ‘60s riffs and overdriven guitars, it's a teeny-tiny nugget of growling alt-rock Coldplay.”[3]

The song is the first B-Side on the "The Scientist" single, along with "I Ran Away".

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Stuck in a corner
Like monkeys in cages
That don't have a number
And fight one another
Try to recover

[Verse 2]
Climb up a ladder
Look up and you see birds
Blind as each other
How long can we suffer?
We're as blind as each other

[Chorus]
On the cloud that you're sitting
There's one born every minute
So much to discover
I've become a believer

[Verse 3]
Sisters and brothers
Who fight one another
Will mourn and deceive us
Will find us and keep us
Take us or leave us

[Verse 4]
How soon is now?
Only how long is never?
I'm nothing but normal
We're something together
Come on and stick together

[Chorus]
On the cloud that you're sitting
There's one born every minute
So much to discover
I've become a believer

[Outro: Simon Pegg]
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
